"They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old: age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them." -Laurence Binyon
Every year, Remembrance takes place on the 11th of November. On this day, we remember all of the fathers, sons, wives, and daughters who have died, were wounded, and the many more who have to live their lives with the scars of battle.
It marks the day World War One ended, at 11am on the 11th month on the 11th day, in 1918. We stand silent and pay our respects, while standing silent for two minutes to remember the soldiers that have fallen.
Why do we hold a two minute silence?
The first two minute silence in Britain was held on November 11 1919, one year after the war, when King George V asked the public to observe a silence at 11 am. This was the beginning of remembering all the soldiers, by standing or sitting still.
On this day, many ceremonies are held at memorials, cenotaphs, and churches throughout Canada, as well as abroad. Today, our school remembers the lives lost by holding our annual Remembrance Day ceremony.
