On Tuesday April 15, 2017, Uber held their Uber Elevate summit where they unveiled plans to introduce flying vehicles.
The company plans on using vehicles that are fully electrically powered, capable of flying 100 miles in 40 minutes, and are capable of vertical takeoff and landing. However, these vehicles don't exist... yet. Uber has signed deals with five companies that are currently working on vehicles that fit this description, and plan to introduce them by 2020 starting in Dubai, and Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas. “I think 2020 is realistic for a vehicle that is not replacing an airplane but replacing a car,” said Richard Pat Anderson, the director of the Flight Research Center at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. This is definitely a difficult project to get off the ground (ha-ha), but Uber’s Jeff Holden has faith that their flying vehicles are “ a natural next step for Uber.”
